FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rock Hill, SC – Comporium, a family-owned regional telecommunications company based in Rock Hill, SC, is proud to announce the inaugural STEM Educator of the Year award, in partnership with South Carolina Future Minds, S2TEM Centers and the STEM Development Foundation. The STEM Educator of the Year award honors teachers who are making a significant difference in the lives of students across the state by providing an excellent curriculum, encouraging lifelong learning, and inspiring a passion for STEM beyond the classroom and into the future. A grand prize winner will be selected from finalists in each of the five S2TEM Center SC regions across South Carolina.
South Carolina faces two converging challenges for the future of its students and workforce: first, a critical shortage of public school educators, particularly in STEM areas; and second, the changing nature of jobs requiring an advanced understanding of STEM content areas and the skills required to tackle complex problems. The state will need to significantly increase its number of high quality STEM educators in order to meet the demands of an evolving economy.
Comporium, a family-owned diversified communications company now employing 1100 people in nine counties across the state, realizes that investing in the STEM Educator of the Year award is also investing in the future of the state’s public education system and workforce.
SC Future Minds was thrilled to received over 250 nominations for the award between December and January—indicating the thirst for teacher recognition and the enthusiasm for STEM educators. Nominees were invited to complete the application, which will then be reviewed by a committee of educators and business representatives from STEM sectors.
One winner will be selected from each of five regional locations to make up the finalists. The regional locations include: Coastal Pee Dee Region, Lowcountry Region, Midlands Region, Upcountry Region, and Western Region. Each finalist will receive $1,000; the grand prize SC STEM Educator will receive $5,000 and funds for professional development. Winners will be announced at STEM Education Day, April 9, 2019, at the state capitol in in Columbia.
