Meet Katie Henderson from District Five Schools of Spartanburg County’s Teacher of the Year
Katie is a math and science teacher from Wellford Academy Of Science And Technology (shout out to Wellford Academy PTO!) She has shown great dedication and determination, here’s a small segment of Katie’s story:
“I first knew I wanted to be a teacher around the age of 5 when my mom would tell me stories about her time in the education field. I admired her and wanted to be just like her! Then, in 3rd grade I met my teacher, Mrs. Felment. Not only did she make learning fun every single day, but she made every student in her classroom feel worthwhile.
The most satisfying part of my day would be during the small group time of my math block. I love it because I get to work with each child in a small group of students, every day. I feel like I can know them better as individuals, academically and personally. We are also able to celebrate their successes, no matter how big or small!
The hardest part about being a teacher is the number of “hats” you wear on any given day. Your attention is always divided and “wheels” in your mind are always thinking about the next step or activity.
Teaching is one of the only professions that as you invest in other’s lives, they simultaneously invest in yours. At the end of the day no matter how tired I am, I know that I’ve done something meaningful.”
