South Carolina Future Minds partners with Bojangles’ on Early Childhood Literacy

Now through September 24, My First Library program allows Bojangles’ customers to honor teachers and support academic achievement of low-income students

For Immediate Release

Charleston, SC–For South Carolinians who love biscuits and  early childhood reading, September is a great month.  Now in its fourth year, South Carolina Future Minds (SCFM) and Bojangles’ bring you the My First Library program, which provides Bojangles’ customers with the opportunity to help purchase summer reading books, honor their favorite teachers, and receive a coupon for a free BoBerry biscuit.

Studies show that summer learning loss accounts for about two-thirds of the ninth grade achievement gap in reading. Meanwhile, the positive effects of summer learning programs like My First Library endure for years. SCFM created My First Library to reach more kindergarten students and improve their chances of succeeding in school.

Through the support of Bojangles’ and its generous customers, SCFM has provided nearly 11,000 books to over 1000 students in nine high-need schools around the state. The partnership also supported Camp AIR (Adventures in Reading) at Gravatt to serve 4th and 5th graders who have been identified by their schools as children who would benefit from additional reinforcement.

“To build a child’s first library is to give a lifelong gift of the love of reading—and all the academic success that comes with it,” says Caroline Mauldin, Executive Director of SCFM. “We are  grateful to Bojangles’ and their customers for making hundreds of ‘first libraries’ possible for children who need them most.”

For the first time this year, the generous contributions of Bojangles’ customers towards the My First Library program will be supplemented by funding by the Dollar General Foundation and the Longleaf Fund, hosted by the Foundation for the Carolinas.

To support this important program, visit your local Bojangles before September 24th.  When customers purchase a $1 teacher tribute card in any one of Bojangles’ 100+ locations across the state, they will help provide new reading books of a child’s choice to kindergarten students  in South Carolina’s  high-need schools.  Participating customers will also receive a coupon for a free BoBerry Biscuit for use on their next visit.  My First Library donations can also be made all year long at
